February Meeting

Our February meeting has been rescheduled to February 21st at 7 pm at the Arcade Library Community Room. The rescheduling is the result of the library being closed for construction work on our usual date.

Our speaker will be Tiffany Urness and her topic, Waljking Ile de France: Exploring the Parisian Countryside. Ms. Urness resides in Paris for six months each year, so this will certainly be an interesting talk.

Remember to enter the Library through the front door so you will be counted as a library patron.

Africa Tour - 2013

I am putting together a group to visit South Africa, Botswana and Zambia in May of 2013. The itinerary is tentative for now but will cover Capetown, the Garden Route in South Africa, the wine country, Sabi Sand/Kruger National Park for game viewing, the Panorama Route, Johannesburg, covering Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. In Botswana we will visit Chobe National Park for great game viewing and in Zambia we will visit Victoria Falls. The tour will end in Capetown so some travelers may wish to stay on and return to the wine country, where a stay at a vineyard can be arranged, or just enjoy more of Capetown. Our group will be small, approximately 10 travelers, and I'm trying to keep the price as low as possible.

DON'T BUY CHILEAN SEA BASS

On my recent trip to Antarctica I learned that what is sold as Chilean Sea Bass is not a sea bass at all but a threated species known as Patagonian Toothfish. When it wouldn't sell under it's real name, the name Chilean Sea Bass was given to it, but the fish is not even a bass to begin with. Please help protect this threatened species by not buying it in supermarkets or restaurants, and passing the word to your friends.

Lost lap robe

Last summer at the potluck at my home a very nice lap robe, used to keep a dish warm while in transit, was left behind. I have never heard from the owner and would very much like to return this to her. If it is yours, please contact me, describing what you left, and we can make arrangements for it to be returned to you.

Finding Travel Companions

Many people in the club are single and are looking for companions for trips. I am starting a new service of putting such travelers in touch with one another. If you wish to participate, send me an e-mail telling me what you are looking for in a travel companion, such as only males or females, a non-smoker or someone more interested in cultural trips than adventure travel, etc. Also tell me what countries you wish to visit and I will post the names of these countries on this site so that interested parties may respond. Also, if you are particularly interested in something such as snorkeling, as I am, or hiking where the destination is not so important, let me know that. I will not put any names on this site, but will keep it confidential until such time as I put the two parties in direct contact.

International Medical Assistance

The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers is a nonprofit group with a database of English speaking physicians in 125 countries. Membership is free although the group asks for a donation to defer costs. Visit their website for more information: www.iamat.org

"I have a funny story about the things I dislike. Last summer my husband and I and 6 year old son went for a 2 week summer vacation in Japan, for fun. I always rehearse and remind my son what we expect of him before we go overseas. As we were standing in line for the plane, I thought this was a good time to rehearse with my son the "rules" and our expectations. I said, "We're going to a different country where almost everthing will be different. If you want things to be the same as at home, then you should stay home and we can arrange that. There will be no whining and complaining or next trip you stay home. Most likely there will be things that will happen that are not going the way we want. We are going to make the best of it, and we will laugh about it when we get home. You must use a calm indoor voice at all times and talk softly in front of other people." The man in front of us in the line said, " Lady could you please make the same announcement to the entire plane?"

Meeting site directions

Our meeting place is the Arcade Public Library Community Room, 2443 Marconi Avenue, just west of Fulton Ave. The building is on the north side of Marconi across the parking lot from a Taco Bell. It is easily accesible from I-80, using the Marconi exit, or from Highway 50, taking the Watt Avenue exits and crossing town on surface streets. Enter the library proper so you will be counted as a library patron for this library sponsored meeting. The entrance to the community room is straight ahead on the left. The parking lot fills quickly, but the office complex next door to the west is empty after 5 pm, so parking is available there.
